Villeroy & Boch and Maria Kohler
This ceramic production company was founded in 1748 by François Boch in Audun-Le-Tiche (Moselle). In 1791, Nicolas Villeroy established a pottery factory in Vaudrevange in the Saarland (now Wallerfangen). In 1809, Jean-François Boch acquired the former Benedictine abbey of Mettlach on the banks of the Saar River. In 1836, Jean-François Boch and Nicolas Villeroy combined the three sites in Mettlach to form the Villeroy & Boch brand. This company became renowned for its high-end floor tiles, sanitary ware, and bathroom fixtures, while also continuing its production of tableware. Maria Kohler is known for her work at the Villeroy & Boch studio in the 1950s and 60s. Her designs, inspired by German and Scandinavian aesthetics, are highly sought after by collectors.
