A glazed earthenware vase by the modernist French ceramic artist Gilbert Valentin (1928-2001) with a bird-like form. A master of glazes, Valentin uses a blue and white glaze against a gritty black ground to create an abstract design. Signed "G. Valentin Les Archanges Vallauris" with the winged Archanges pottery logo. 50s.

Gilbert Valentin ( 1928-2001 )
Son of an art ironworker, he learns the iron technique and sculpture on wood. He discovers the pottery to Dieulefit in 1946, takes course of ceramic and a training course to the earthenware factory of Luneville in 1948.
In 1950 he settles down to Vallauris and creates the pottery "les Archanges". He exhibits in Paris, Milan, New York ( 1954-55 ), then Stuttgart, Faenza. In 1960, Jean Cocteau becomes the president of the "Club des Archanges". From 1963, he settles an ironwork studio, parallel with its creations of potteries. Gilbert Valentin is one of bigger names of the pottery to Vallauris.
