At the 16th century, in the region of Vallauris (south of France) the business of cooking ceramic is going to start. The arrival of the railroad at the end of the 19th century marks the beginning of the massive expansion of this production. After the crisis of 1929 and the competition of new materials (aluminum, stainless steel) ceramic loses its utilitarian function and takes an artistic dimension. This current, already present with the family Massier, develops with Clément, Delphin and Jérôme via the introduction of enamels of color and metallic pigments. In 1930, Jean Gerbino's workshop applies its unique process of colored lands. In 1947, Picasso settles down to Vallauris and realizes to the workshop Madoura a series of creations which will mark definitely the history of Vallauris. After Picasso, many designers and artists (Ramié, Baud, Capron, Derval, Innocenti) are going to converge on the city and to offer through their works a big variety of styles.
