Large Art deco plate in enamelled earthenware, decoration of a head representing a woman from  the ethnic group Mangbetu, in the North of Congo. Signed Jacques Cartier and dated 1931, year of the Colonial Exhibition of Paris.

About...

Jacques Cartier (1907-2001)
His uncle Eugène Cartier, painter and sculptor encourages his artistic talents from an early age. Arrived at Paris, he works with Edouard Marcel SANDOZ, then in Paul JOUVE's workshop. In 1922, at the age of 15 till 1940, he is participating in the French Artists exhibitions. His Art Deco works will be rewarded by the Rosa Bonheur Prize.
